UVA Health Receives Grant to Address Burnout among Healthcare Workers

UVA Health has received $2.14 million in federal support to expand its nationally lauded program, called Wisdom and Wellbeing, that is addressing burnout among healthcare providers and helping them cope with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program was developed by Richard Westphal, PhD, RN, of the UVA School of Nursing, and Peggy Plews-Ogan, MD, of UVA’s School of Medicine.  As part of the program, all employees of UVA Health can take the eight-week Mindfulness for Healthcare Employees Course at no charge.

The new grant is part of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan and the Lorna Breen Act.  It will allow UVA Health to expand the reach of the program by partnering with Region Ten’s Community Mental Health and Wellness Coalition to provide training for health workers in Charlottesville as well as Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties.  The UVA Mindfulness Center will be collaborating with the Wisdom and Wellbeing Program to help develop mindfulness resources for healthcare providers in the region as one component of the grant.
