Beneficial Effects of an Online Mindfulness-Based Intervention on Sleep Quality

Many individuals experience inadequate quantity and quality of sleep which can negatively impact physical and mental health. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have the potential to improve sleep. These investigators from Italy tested whether an online MBI could improve sleep quality. The MBI included 12 biweekly meditation classes with recordings for individual practice as well as dietary advice to promote sleep. A total of 56 individuals with poor sleep were randomly assigned to the MBI (n = 28) and control (n = 28) groups. MBI participants had significantly greater improvements in sleep quality and insomnia than controls. These results supported the beneficial effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on sleep quality.
