The Impact of Psychological Interventions with Elements of Mindfulness on Empathy, Well-Being, and Reduction of Burnout in Physicians

This systematic review aimed to analyze psychological interventions with elements of mindfulness that have been used with physicians to reduce burnout and foster empathy and well-being. A total of 18 studies conducted in five different countries were included.  Different types of interventions were evaluated, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, other mindfulness programs, and two smartphone apps.  Regardless of the specific type of psychological intervention with mindfulness that was used, the results, in general, demonstrated a positive impact on empathy, well-being, and burnout among participating physicians. The authors concluded that this review provides support for interventions that can be helpful for burnout prevention and/or reduction among physicians.
