Effects of Mindfulness-Based Interventions on Fatigue in Cancer Survivors
This study was designed to determine the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in improving fatigue-related outcomes in adult cancer survivors. Twenty-three studies reporting on 21 randomized controlled trials including 2239 participants were included. A majority of participants were breast cancer survivors. Twelve of the studies evaluated mindfulness-based stress reduction and 11 used other MBSs. The MBIs significantly reduced fatigue compared to controls at post-intervention and first follow-up. MBIs also significantly improved vitality/vigor at post-intervention and first follow-up. The authors concluded that MBIs show promise in improving fatigue and vitality/vigor in cancer survivors, and that more rigorous trials are needed to address current gaps in the evidence.
