March 13, 12-1 PM
University of Virginia Pinn Hall Auditorium

As part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the UVa School of Nursing Compassionate Care Initiative, Roshi Joan Halifax, founder of Upaya Zen Center, will offer the 2019 Zula Mae Baber Bice Lecture in conjunction with the School of Medicine Medical Center Hour.

An anthropologist and activist, a 1960s “wild child” and a celibate priest, Roshi Joan is the founder, abbess, and head teacher of Upaya Zen Center, a Buddhist monastery in Santa Fe, NM. She is best known for sitting at the bedside of terminally ill patients and pioneering a new form of contemplative care, known as the ‘Being With Dying’ project, now in its 17th year.

Free and open to all, Roshi Joan’s lecture will be followed by a reception.
