Please join us in congratulating Bryce Olenczak, MD, Chief Resident in the Department of Plastic Surgery, for receiving the Bostwick Award. According to the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS) this prize is awarded to the “resident with the best project in the field of aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery,” with applications accepted from all regional Plastic Surgery societies.

“As the recipient of the Bostwick Award I am honored to represent the University of Virginia and the Department of Plastic Surgery among worldwide leaders in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery,” says Dr. Olenczak.

Collaboration between the Department of Plastic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering allows the departments to innovate and improve outcomes for our breast reconstruction patients. Dr. Olenczak remarks, “Having this research prominently recognized at the Atlanta Breast Surgery Symposium affords us the opportunity to influence breast reconstruction beyond those patients we directly care for at the University of Virginia.”

The award honors Dr. John Bostwick, former Emory University Professor and Chief of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Olenczak’s abstract, titled “Fenestration Improves Acellular Dermal Matrix Biointegration: An Investigation of Revascularization with Photoacoustic Microscopy” will be presented at the 34th Annual Atlanta Breast Surgery Symposium, Jan. 20-22, in Atlanta, GA.
