Sana Syed, MD, MSCR, MSDS, an associate professor in the School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics, was recently awarded an R01 grant from the NIH providing $3,522,906 in funding over the next five years to investigate metabolic pathways associated with Crohn’s disease in children. This award will support the efforts of the Syed Lab and their collaborators Jason Papin, PhD, a professor in SOM’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, Subra Kugathasan, MD, and Jason Matthews, PhD, at Emory University, and Facundo Fernandez, PhD and David Gaul, PhD at Georgia Institute of Technology.
By using cutting-edge computational approaches to identify biomarkers and metabolic shifts that occur in the gut prior to the development of severe disease, Dr. Syed and her collaborators aim to identify at-risk pediatric populations and help physicians intervene earlier with personalized precision therapies. Reviewers highlighted the significance of the work, the innovative approaches proposed, and the excellent reputations of the investigators and supporting institutions.
