Xinxin Chen, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow Xinxin Chen, PhD, of the Qi laboratory in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, was awarded the 2023 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Postdoctoral Fellowship. This 3-year fellowship recognizes Dr. Chen’s exceptional dedication and contributions to diabetes research, positioning her as a promising researcher in the field.

Dr. Chen’s research focuses on unraveling the importance of ER-associated degradation (ERAD) in maintaining mitochondrial dynamics and function in brown adipocytes–a unique cell type key for thermogenesis. This area of study holds particular significance in the context of obesity and type-2 diabetes research, as disruptions in mitochondrial equilibrium are known to play a central role in the development of metabolic disorders. Dr. Chen’s work will not only shed light on the significance of ER protein degradation in mitochondrial biology, but carries the potential to unveil novel therapeutic targets for addressing complications associated with metabolic disorders.

Dr. Chen’s receipt of this prestigious postdoctoral fellowship is a significant milestone in her burgeoning career. The support from ADA will undoubtedly propel her research endeavors, furthering our understanding of diabetes and potentially leading to innovative advancements in its diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
