Lulu Jiang, PhD, from the UVA Department of Neuroscience, in collaboration with Yimin Zou, PhD, from UC San Diego, was awarded more than $200,000 in funding from CureAlz to investigate how tau proteins contribute to synapse loss in Alzheimer’s disease, a key driver of memory loss and cognitive decline.

The research focuses on the planar cell polarity pathway, which normally maintains synaptic stability, to understand how toxic tau oligomers disrupt these connections. Insights from this work could point to strategies for protecting synapses and preserving brain function, with potential implications for developing therapies to slow or prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The project is supported by the CureAlz Foundation for two years.
