Kathleen (Kate) McManus, MD, and assistant professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases, was interviewed by CNN for an article titled “Insurance requirements for prior authorization may prompt ‘devastating’ delays.” Dr. McManus says the time it takes to get a prior authorization can perpetuate racial disparities and disproportionately affect those with lower-paying, hourly jobs. McManus and her colleagues published work in 2020 about regional racial disparities in health plans’ prior authorizations for HIV prevention drugs.
