UVA researchers have acquired a Leica Microsystems Stellaris 8 STED (Stimulated Emission Depletion) super-resolution microscope through a $1.25 million grant from the NIH and $150,000 in matching funds from the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
Ammasi Periasamy, PhD, a professor of biology and biomedical engineering, applied for the grant with a dozen other researchers who will use the microscope. The new microscope will offer high resolution capabilities which will transform research, allowing better understanding of what’s happening at the cellular level. The microscope is part of the W.M. Keck Center for Cellular Imaging.
