Thomas P. Loughran, Jr., MD, the F. Palmer Weber-Smithfield Foods Professor of Oncology Research and Professor of Medicine, recently signed on to lead the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center for another five years. In a Q&A for UVA Health Development’s publication Investing in Hope, Dr. Loughran reflects on the center’s key accomplishments over the past decade and shares his vision for taking the Cancer Center to even greater heights, including through the new UVA Paul & Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology. He describes how interdisciplinary collaborations among the Cancer Center’s diverse researchers will continue to fuel transformational discoveries that extend and save lives, and he discusses the vital role of philanthropic funding in the center’s groundbreaking science.
