Dr. Shaffrey was a beloved leader, a brilliant and tirelessly dedicated neurosurgeon to his patients, and an enduring and kindhearted friend. His remarkable life impacted so many across UVA Health and the community, from the patients he treated to the healthcare professionals he worked alongside, to the students he mentored toward future excellence. Dr. Shaffrey will be missed enormously, and we take great pride in knowing his incredible legacy will live on.
Gifts to the Mark E. Shaffrey Fund for Excellence in Neurosurgery can be made via the online fundraising page. Funds collected shall be used by the Department of Neurosurgery to ensure the legacy of Dr. Shaffrey continues to influence the lives of those who come after him. The fund will support what Dr. Shaffrey valued the most, including residents’ research projects, awards, and visiting scholars. Through this fund, the Department of Neurosurgery chair and residency program director will have the capacity to meet the department’s dynamic educational needs and capitalize on emerging opportunities to strengthen its academic standing.
