Message from the Chair – January 2023

University of Virginia Dr Mitchell Rosner

Welcome back from the holidays, and I wish everyone a very happy, healthy, and productive new year. As we start the month of January, the DOM is poised for a busy year with new clinical programs and a growing research portfolio. We are actively recruiting in nearly all divisions and looking to expand in all of our missions. Indeed, a great sign of a vibrant Department. This is an excellent lead-in to the focus of this month’s featured Division of Infectious Disease and Global Health. This Division is a top ten leader in the field, and their past and current contributions have shaped their specialty and improved the lives of countless people. This is most evident in their transformative work in global health. I encourage all of you to read about their many impressive accomplishments.

With great sadness, we also celebrate the past accomplishments of Dr. Michael Rein, who recently passed away after a courageous fight against cancer. Dr. Rein was a legendary figure in the Department whose educational and clinical excellence set a standard for all of us. He was known for his kindness, gentleness, and ability to speak his mind respectfully and effectively. His enthusiasm for medicine and caring for patients was a model for many of us. He will be missed.

With best wishes,

Mitchell H. Rosner, MD, MACP
Henry B. Mulholland Professor of Medicine
Chair, Department of Medicine
