Rachel Moon, MD, the Harrison Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, was featured both locally and on national TV stations, discussing the risks associated with weighted sleepwear for infants.
Weighted sleepwear is gaining popularity for infants, but parents need to be aware of its potential dangers. Recently, federal legislation was introduced to ban weighted sleepwear for children under one year old.
“There are multiple concerns that we have about these products,” said Dr. Moon. Weighted sleepwear does not have safety standards for infants. Anything weighted on a sleeping child can make it harder for them to breathe. According to Dr. Moon, “Some of these products have a pound of weight in them, on the baby’s chest, and that’s more than 10% of a normal newborn’s body weight.”
