Melina Kibbe, MD, Dean, UVA School of Medicine

Melina Kibbe, MD, was highlighted in the April 17 issue of Modern Healthcare about her goal to lead the School of Medicine with transparency to instill trust and increase excellence.

Dr. Kibbe became dean of the School of Medicine and chief health affairs officer for UVA Health in September 2021. To create a culture of excellence and support the updated mission to “transform health and inspire hope for all Virginians and beyond,” Dean Kibbe says transparency is essential because it improves accountability while building trust across the School of Medicine. Her focus on transparency started with data collection and creation of the school’s first annual report in 20 years. To gain buy-in to a culture of transparency among employees, the next step included openly sharing data like diversity information, financial information, research metrics, etc. This led to the establishment of clear, measurable goals for employees and the school. She also emphasizes celebration of accomplishments that reflect the school’s priorities. These small steps — open conversations, data gathering, setting clear metrics, recognition, and listening to employees through engagement surveys — point to transparency as actions. “Anything is possible when transparency permeates the culture,” states Dr. Kibbe.
