Allison Martin, MD, MPH
Congratulations to Allison Martin, MD, MPH, General Surgery Resident, on receiving the Hilary Sanfey Outstanding Resident Award. This honor from the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) “recognizes surgical trainees who demonstration potential as future leaders in surgery” who “demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities.”
According to its website, the Association of Women Surgeons “is a not-for-profit educational and professional organization. With over 2,500 members, both women and men, AWS is one of the largest organizations dedicated to enhancing the interaction and exchange of information between women surgeons.”
When asked how she felt about being chosen to receive the Hilary Sanfey Outstanding Resident Award, Martin says she is honored and incredibly humbled. She adds, “Amazingly, two former UVA surgery residents — Dr. Traci Hedrick, a current UVA colorectal surgeon and Dr. Robin Petroze, a pediatric surgeon at the University of Florida — are prior recipients and both have been such supportive mentors during my residency. That makes the award even more meaningful for me. I am grateful to the AWS for their continued support of my career and to Dr. Friel who is a champion for all of the surgery residents and who nominated me for this award.”
Charles Friel, MD, Professor of Surgery, General Surgery Program Director, commended Dr. Martin for being an outstanding resident and contributor, both locally and nationally. “I am so pleased her hard work has been appropriately recognized on a national stage,” he says. “It is an awesome honor! I am also proud to be part of a department that has had three winners over the past 10 years.”
Dr. Martin is a graduate of the University of Louisville and the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. While at UVA Dr. Martin has won numerous awards, including the William Dion Outstanding Intern Award and the Curt G. Tribble Award for Resident Teaching. She has been an active member in our UVA global health program and her academic research has focused on global oncologic disease. In addition, she was a founding member and treasurer of the Housestaff Council for Diversity and Inclusion and was the co-director of the inaugural Trainee Diversity and Inclusion Conference. She is recognized both locally and nationally as a physician leader. Dr. Martin will continue her training at MD Anderson where she will do a fellowship in surgical oncology.
Dr. Martin will be honored at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons in October 2019.
