Kim Penberthy, PhD, MA, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, was featured across Virginia and on national TV stations discussing how daylight saving time can affect mental health.

With daylight saving time beginning on Sunday, March 9, many may experience a boost in mood due to the longer daylight hours. However, a UVA expert warns that if feelings of sadness or fatigue last for more than two weeks after the time change, it could be a sign of depression, and seeking help may be beneficial.

“It seems like not that much of a difference and yet it is a big deal for our bodies,” says Dr. Penberthy. “One thing that you can do is sort of start to slowly build a shift in that for yourself.”

Getting more sunlight and adjusting your sleep routine can help make the transition smoother.
