Jie Sun, PhD and the Sun Lab’s research about the relationship between diabetes and COVID-19 was covered in the Daily Press and other outlets.

Dr. Sun’s research establishes the relationship between diabetes and COVID-19 is bi-directional: while individuals with diabetes and high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) are predisposed to severe COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 infection can also cause hyperglycemia and exacerbate underlying metabolic syndrome. New research in the Sun laboratory has discovered a metabolic pathway connecting diabetes and severe COVID-19 complications. The discovery shows that a second-generation insulin-sensitizing drug known as MSDC-0206K could potentially protect patients from both inflammation and dangerous glucose levels, which can rise due to COVID.
