Elias Karroum, MD, PhD, an associate professor in the UVA Department of Neurology, was featured on TV stations across Virginia and nationally discussing restless legs syndrome.
Millions of Americans are affected by restless legs syndrome, a condition that makes it hard to relax because of an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. “They have this internal tension in their legs and have to move them to release that tension. This is the major component, and it mainly happens when they are at rest, inactive—usually in the evening, at night, or at bedtime,” said Dr. Karroum. He also points out that various factors can worsen the condition, including alcohol—particularly carbonated beverages like champagne or seltzers—and certain antidepressants, such as Zoloft and Prozac.
