Costi Sifri, MD, a professor in the Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases (ID) and International Health, was featured in hundreds of national news outlets after talking with The Associated Press about summer colds and COVID.
For generally healthy individuals, timing is important when getting any vaccine. If you’re getting a COVID booster for a specific event—like a trip or wedding—do it a few weeks in advance, doctors advise. Otherwise, it may be better to wait until fall, when COVID-19 cases are expected to rise in the winter. “You want to be fully protected at the time that it’s most important for you,” said Dr. Sifri.
Sifri emphasized that individuals at higher risk of complications should consult their doctor to determine the best approach for them. He noted that older adults and people with weakened immune systems might require additional booster doses compared to others.
