Chris Holstege, MD
Chris Holstege, MD, a professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics at the UVA School of Medicine and director of the Blue Ridge Poison Center, was featured across Virginia and on TV stations nationally discussing the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning during winter.
Staying warm during a winter storm is crucial, but some methods can be dangerous. Dr. Holstege warns against using carbon monoxide-producing devices, like portable generators, in unsafe conditions. Improper use can allow this odorless gas to enter your home, causing symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and loss of consciousness.
According to Dr. Holstege, “Having a generator far enough from the house — and certainly not in the house — [and] having a carbon monoxide detector is the best thing to have.”
