Carrie Sopata, MD, a gynecologist and associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UVA, was featured across Virginia and on TV stations nationally discussing self-serve HPV tests.
Eight in 10 sexually active adults will contract human papillomavirus (HPV) at some point in their lives, and HPV is responsible for 95% of cervical cancers in women. Until recently, Pap smears were the primary method of screening for this infection. However, doctors are now pioneering efforts to move early detection from the clinic to the home with self-administered HPV tests.
“This would allow us to screen more people for cervical cancer and hopefully get them the help that they need,” said Dr. Sopata.
