Meet Our Chief Residents!

October 19, 2017 by jrs3yc@virginia.edu

Meet Katie Blackard and Beth Dexter-Rice, our chief residents for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Katie:

Proudest/greatest achievement outside of the professional realm?

I’m not sure this counts as an achievement per se….but I’m very proud to be an aunt to my nephew and two nieces!

What are you usually doing on the weekend or during time off?

Eating my way through Charlottesville, visiting local wineries, going to the Farmer’s Market, shopping at Loft!

Best advice anyone ever gave you?

As you ramble on thru Life, Brother, Whatever be your Goal, Keep your Eye upon the Doughnut And not upon the Hole.” -Dr. Greg Hayden (from Mayflower Donuts)

What about you would surprise us?

I never read the Harry Potter books!

What are you most excited about for your residency?

I’m excited to see what type of Pediatrics we all choose, and to see where we will end up for fellowship/jobs!

Beth:

Proudest/greatest achievement outside of the professional realm?

Being happily married for 5 years.

What are you usually doing on the weekend or during time off?

Visiting a winery, going for a walk or hike, reading a book, or visiting family.

Best advice anyone ever gave you?

In certain situations, no sometimes means maybe. When you want something, it’s important to strike a balance between persistence and flexibility. Stick up for yourself while showing that you can work with the other person.

What about you would surprise us?

Although I’m not fluent in a second language I really liked studying languages in school. I’ve taken classes in French, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and Croatian.

What are you most excited about for your residency?

As a chief resident, I’m looking forward to continuing to improve the educational experience for both residents and medical students. I’m also excited to be involved in policy decisions that will improve  UVA’s residency program, education, and quality of care for patients.
