Elections to American Pediatric Society

April 14, 2014 by School of Medicine Webmaster

logo-apsCongratulations to Dr. Karen Fairchild and Dr. Vicky Norwood for their recent election to the American Pediatric Society! The American Pediatric Society (APS) and the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) are dedicated to advancing academic pediatrics, focusing on networking, advocacy, mentoring, and education. We encourage our faculty members to get involved with this great organization. For more information, please visit their web site.

Dr. Fairchild:  “I’m a neonatologist. Previously, I did bench research on neonatal immunity and hypothermia until 20012. My current research is predictive monitoring in NICU patients, using heart rate and other vital sign patterns for early detection of sepsis and other life-threatening illnesses. I would encourage junior faculty who are involved in research to become members of SPR which is the first step toward eventually getting into APS. There are quite a few SPR members on our faculty who can initiate a nomination.”

Dr. Norwood: “While my career has moved from concentrations in basic science research to clinical research and education, and now new activities (like all of you!) with quality improvement and advocacy, the SPR (and now the APS) have provided excellent opportunities for learning, mentorship, and networking.  So remember to think about these organizations, not just as ‘research groups’, but groups of academic pediatricians who are constantly striving to help each other and all of pediatrics to do more and do it better.  We would welcome all UVA faculty to consider getting involved.”
