ICD-10 is Coming – October 1st, 2014!
The International Classification of Diseases is the United Nations’-sponsored World Health Organization’s “standard diagnostic tool for epidemiology, health management, and clinical purposes.” It is published by the World Health Organization and used worldwide for morbidity and mortality statistics, reimbursement systems, and automated decision support in health care.
ICD-9 was developed in 1975 and published in 1978 and the USA has not updated it since that time. Work on ICD-10 began in 1983 and started to be used by WHO Member States in 1994. We can say the USA is a late adopter. The ICD-10 allows more than 155,000 (17,000 in ICD-9) different codes and permits tracking of many new diagnoses and procedures.
In August 2008, the US Department of Health and Human Services proposed that the ICD-9 code sets would be replaced by ICD-10 effective October 1st, 2013. In April 2012 they published a rule that would delay from October 1st, 2013 to October 1st, 2014, the compliance date for ICD-10.
There is a team dedicated at UVA to educating and implementing ICD-10. Dr. Brooke Vergales is the pediatric department’s representative. Dr. Robert Gold, UVA’s ICD-10 Physician Educator for the project, will be having in-person, mandatory sessions for pediatric faculty. You must attend 1 session. At some point there will also be CBLs that you must complete.
Pediatrics will be offering two sessions (more may be added later):
November 20, 10-11 AM – Claude Moore HS Library, Rooms 1335-1337, room capacity ~ 25.
December 5, 12-1 PM – Pediatrics Conference Room, 3rd Floor Old Medical School Building, Rm 3906. The Pediatric Faculty Meeting will be devoted entirely to this training (this is in place of the normally scheduled faculty meeting). Lunch will be provided.
There will be other dates and times available in Culpeper and at Fontaine in the next couple of weeks.
If there are any questions or concerns about this, please contact Brooke Vergales directly at bld5j@virginia.edu.
