The University of Virginia Health System is the newest entry into IAC’s Birth Dose Honor Roll, which recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that have attained high coverage levels for administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. The University of Virginia Health System has immunized 92 percent of babies since 2014 and instituted additional steps such as implementing policies and robust patient education to prevent perinatal transmission of hepatitis B.
We are one of 3 hospitals in Virginia and 1 of 2 academic centers in the country that have achieved this level of compliance with administration of the hepatitis B vaccine.
Here’s what it takes to be on the honor roll:
- Achieved, over a 12-month period, a coverage rate of 90% or greater for administering hepatitis B vaccine before hospital discharge to all newborns (regardless of weight), including those whose parents refuse vaccination.
- Implemented written policies, procedures, and protocols to protect all newborns from hepatitis B virus infection prior to hospital discharge.
