Nadia Adotevi, PhD

Congratulations to Nadia Adotevi, PhD, a postdoctural researcher in the Department of Anesthesiology, who was recently awarded the 2023 Epilepsia Open Prize for basic science. Her epilepsy-related research focused on the study of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and the generation of neuronal activation maps with spatial resolution at the cellular level. The maps aid in the identification of brain structures and neuronal pathways during seizures, helping researchers better understand the relationship between TLE and comorbidities such as memory impairment, anxiety, and depression seen in many TLE patients.

Dr. Adotevi’s research was conducted in collaboration with Jaideep Kapur, MD, a professor of neurology at UVA School of Medicine and director of The Brain Institute. Read their research article “Focal impaired awareness seizures in a rodent model: A functional anatomy”  in Epilepsia Open. The journal also published an interview with Dr. Adotevi about her career, research, and future work.
