Fern Hauck, MD
Fern Hauck, MD, a professor in the Department of Family Medicine, was honored with the Collaborative Excellence in Public Service Award by the University of Virginia Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. This award recognizes a team of faculty members, from diverse departments and disciplines, who demonstrate the greatest collaborative impact on societal wellbeing in a particular place or community and who have pursued that wellbeing together with students.
Dr. Hauck was selected for her interdisciplinary collaboration on the Cville Tulips project supporting recently resettled Afghan and Syrian women through creative arts, English learning, and health education. Her collaborators are Bonnie Gordon, an experienced community engagement practitioner and leader of inclusive arts programming, and Elizabeth Wittner from the Center for American English Language and Culture.
Many program participants come from cultures where access to education and healthcare is restricted, especially to women. Dr. Hauck brings her expertise in global health and refugee care, which requires cultural sensitivity.
Congratulations to Dr. Hauck and her team on receiving this esteemed award. We are grateful for her contributions to our community and the University’s public mission.
