Brian Brenner, MD, has been named 2024 Resident/Fellow of the Year by the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA). The award recognizes Dr. Brenner’s significant contributions to ASRA events related to regional anesthesia and pain medicine and the welfare of residents, his example as role model and mentor, and embodiment of ASRA values.

Dr. Brenner attended the University of Virginia School of Medicine during which time he served as president of UVA’s chapter of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, an organization that leads activities to better the healthcare of veterans and service members of the Charlottesville area.

After obtaining his medical degree, he matched into UVA’s anesthesiology residency program. As a resident, in addition to his many advocacy efforts and state/national leadership roles within societies, Dr. Brenner serves as one of the chief residents in the anesthesiology residency. He has excelled in clinical and academic work and also consistently scored in the top five percent among his national peer cohort on his in-training examinations each year.

As a Global Health Leadership Track Scholar within the anesthesiology department, he recently returned from a two-week global health rotation at Mittaphab Hospital in Vientiane, Laos, co-directed by Thomas Pajewski, MD, PhD, as part of the Midwest Spine Foundation. Dr. Brenner is currently completing a selective ASA anesthesiology policy research rotation in political affairs in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Brenner grew up in a military family and will serve as an active-duty physician in the U.S. Navy after completing his residency.

“We’re very proud of Dr. Brenner. He has taken on many challenges effortlessly and he represents our program and department extremely well,” remarks Stephen Collins, MD, Residency Program Director, Department of Anesthesiology.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Brenner on this tremendous achievement. He will accept the award at the 49th Annual Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Meeting March 21-23 in San Diego, CA.
