Alexys Riddick, fifth-year Biomedical Sciences graduate student
Alexys Riddick, a fifth-year Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program student, received the 2024 Aspiring Leader and Phenomenal Woman Award, which honors members of the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACCC) whose contributions have made it a more inclusive and better place to work. She was among awardees recognized at a luncheon on March 1 at The Graduate Hotel organized by Marquita Taylor, PhD, UVACCC Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Phenomenal Woman Awards Committee. The event included two keynote speakers that addressed their thoughts on leadership and the women who have made a tremendous impact on their careers. “It was very inspiring!” exclaimed Alexys, “We left with full bellies and full hearts.”
Alexys is currently conducting her dissertation research in the lab of Professor Hui Zong, PhD, in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology. Her work focuses on BRCA1-mutant breast cancer prevention.
In addition to this award, Alexys has participated in many initiatives at UVA, including Shades of Sisterhood, the Black Graduate and Professional Student Organization, and most recently co-founded Project Bridge with the goal of making research accessible to the Charlottesville community.
