March 21, 2023 by jta6n@virginia.edu

On Friday, March 17, the UVA School of Medicine’s Class of 2023 learned where they will continue their training as residents at hospitals across the country, including UVA Medical Center. Match Day is held at the same time in March at medical schools around the U.S. The event brings together family, friends, and faculty to help the soon-to-be doctors celebrate this momentous occasion. At noon, the students simultaneously opened envelopes that revealed the location of their residencies. The Class of 2023 was 52% female and 16.4% URiM and performed magnificently this year, matching into 25 different specialty programs across 30 of our United States. 23 students matched to residency programs at UVA.

The Match Day ceremonies took place at Old Cabell Hall where School of Medicine Dean Melina R. Kibbe, MD, congratulated students on the culmination of their years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication to the field of medicine. Kibbe said, “Today you have reached the pinnacle of your undergraduate medical education. I know from experience, it is one of the most exciting and anticipated days of your career in medicine.” As they embark on the next phase of their journey, she encouraged students to remember medicine is not just science, but an art that requires them to care for patients with a compassionate, open mind and a dedication to excellence.

Our students matched to the following programs: Anesthesiology (12); Dermatology (2); Emergency Medicine (7); Family Medicine (11); Internal Medicine (26); Medicine-Pediatrics (2); Medicine-Preliminary (1); Medicine-Primary (1); Neurosurgery (2); Neurology (2); Obstetrics-Gynecology (11); Ophthalmology (4); Orthopedic Surgery (13); Otolaryngology (4); Pathology (4); Pediatrics (18); Pediatrics-Medical Genetics (1); Physical Med and Rehab (3); Plastic Surgery (2);Psychiatry (7); Radiation Oncology (1); Radiology-Diagnostic (4); Interventional Radiology (1); Surgery-General (9); Surgery-Preliminary (5); Thoracic Surgery (1); Vascular Surgery (2); Transitional (2); and Urology (1).
