Worthington (Sandy) George Schenk III, MD

It is with great sadness that we notify you that Worthington (Sandy) George Schenk III, MD, a professor in the Department of Surgery, died on February 7, 2024, after a battle with cancer. Dr. Schenk was a general surgeon who specialized in surgical procedures to help patients with renal failure and diagnostic ultrasound for parathyroid disease. He was also skilled in dialysis access surgery, surgical critical care, and vascular surgery.

A native of upstate New York, Dr. Schenk initially aspired to become an analytical chemist. However, wanting to directly serve others, he followed in the footsteps of his father, who also was a surgeon. He earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, before joining the University of Virginia as a trauma surgeon in 1982. Dr. Schenk considered each patient to be an important member of their own healthcare team. He endeavored to offer patients a sense of hope that the right diagnosis and treatment could offer a high quality of life.

Please join us in extending our condolences to Dr. Schenk’s family, friends, and colleagues in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Schenk’s obituary may be found here.
