The School of Medicine appointed Madhusmita (Madhu) Misra, MD, as the chair of the UVA Department of Pediatrics and the physician-in-chief of UVA Health Children’s in 2023. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Misra has been engaged in research related to neuroendocrine, neuropsychiatric, metabolic and bone consequences of conditions spanning the weight spectrum from anorexia nervosa to obesity for over two decades. Her work has been paradigm shifting in defining management strategies for low bone density in adolescent and young adult women with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.
Dr. Misra has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2000. She was recently awarded her seventh R01 grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for research she is conducting with Karen Miller, MD, at Massachusetts General Hospital. They are examining the impact of sequential use of romosozumab (as a bone anabolic agent) and zoledronic acid (an antiresorptive) in improving bone outcomes in young women suffering from functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.
Additionally, Dr. Misra published a book titled Pediatric Endocrinology: A Practical Clinical Guide, 4th Edition that she co-edited with Sally Radovick, MD. Dr. Misra has more than 250 original research publications to her credit, and has authored over 100 chapters, reviews and position statements. Her many national leadership roles include past president of the Pediatric Endocrine Society.
Since joining UVA, Dr. Misra has advanced clinical care by fostering collaborations across and beyond UVA Health Children’s. She has also developed a strong research infrastructure and hired young investigators to establish a pipeline of research within the Department of Pediatrics, enhanced pediatric training programs, and strengthened community engagement.
