On Tuesday evening, September 24, the Committee on Women in Medicine and Science (COWIMS) hosted a fall reception in the Medical Education Building’s first-floor lobby for UVA Health faculty, staff, students, and residents. Aligning with the annual Women in Medicine Month that occurs each September, this reception acknowledged and celebrated women in medicine and science.

Over 50 women and allies filled the space, including Melina Kibbe, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine and Chief Health Affairs Officer, and Professor of Surgery; Susan Pollart, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development and Professor of Family Medicine; and Meg Keeley, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education and Professor of Pediatrics. Several department chairs, including Alan Tsung, MD, Professor and Chair of Surgery and Ling Qi, PhD, Professor and Chair of Molecular Physiology & Biological Physics, not only attended, but encouraged their faculty to attend as well.

COWIMS is so appreciative of our chair, Kate McManus, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, who provided welcome remarks to the guests. Co-chairs of the COWIMS Programming and Events Subcommittee Alyssa Mixon, DO, MBA, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Kathryn Xixis, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology, also provided remarks and thanked guests for attending the event.

Dr. Mixon, Dr. Xixis, along with Lynn McDaniel, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics (who is also on the COWIMS Steering Committee and serves on the Programming and Events Subcommittee) organized this incredibly wonderful event, with the help of Ashley Ayers, Senior Director of Faculty Leadership Programs and Patty Brophy, Education Outreach Coordinator.
