The School of Medicine’s Director of Faculty Awards and Recognition position was initiated a year ago to support the nomination of SOM faculty for prestigious national awards. Highlights from the first year, as reported by Anneke Schroen, MD, MPH, Director of Faculty Awards and Recognition, include meeting individually with 23 department chairs to discuss faculty award sponsorship, updating an award catalog to now feature over 175 national and prestigious local awards, and generating content and structure for departmental proposals on establishing a faculty awards and recognition program. A new Dean’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentorship will also be added to the 2023 Dean’s Awards portfolio.

In the last year, Dr. Schroen was involved with or aware of 21 faculty nominations for prestigious national and local awards, 18 of which were submitted. Among nominations with known outcomes, 45% were awarded. Outcomes are pending for 7 nominations. Faculty nominee demographics include 48% women, 67% Professors, 14% Associate Professors, 19% Assistant Professors, and 10% identifying as underrepresented in medicine.

Efforts next year will be directed to increasing the number of nominations for School of Medicine, University, statewide and national awards; launching a searchable awards database; and continuing to support our faculty in achieving greater visibility nationally through prestigious award and society membership nominations.
