The UVA School of Medicine Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Ankush Gosain, MD, PhD, as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief for UVA Children’s Hospital effective November 15, 2024. Dr. Gosain joins UVA from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he served as the Dr. David R. and Kiku Akers Endowed Chair of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital Colorado and Associate Vice Chair of Pediatric Surgical Research in the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Gosain is a distinguished pediatric surgeon-scientist who leads NIH-funded research focused on the enteric nervous system and gastrointestinal mucosal immune development, particularly in relation to congenital colorectal diseases like Hirschsprung disease. His work aims to develop innovative therapies to address these complex health issues. Dr. Gosain’s research bridges basic and translational science, reflecting his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and treatment options.
In addition to his research, Dr. Gosain is highly regarded for his clinical expertise in pediatric colorectal surgery, liver tumors, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and pediatric trauma. His clinical practice not only ensures high-quality patient care but also informs and enhances his research efforts. Dr. Gosain is also a prominent leader in the medical community, holding key positions in several professional organizations and advocating for the development of future medical professionals.
The School of Medicine and Department of Surgery are grateful for the hard work and dedication from Eugene McGahren, MD, during his tenure as Chief of the Pediatric Surgery Division and Surgeon-in-Chief for UVA Children’s Hospital. Dr. McGahren will continue to provide valuable leadership and guidance to the department and division.
