Andrew Parsons, MD, MPH, FACP, has been awarded the Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator by the American College of Physicians (ACP), a national organization of internal medicine physicians. Award recipients will be recognized at ACP’s annual Convocation ceremony on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, where ACP is hosting its annual scientific conference, Internal Medicine Meeting 2024, through April 20.

The Herbert S. Waxman Award recognizes an ACP member who is an internal medicine interest group leader, clinical clerkship director, program director, or faculty member (no higher than the level of an associate professor of medicine) who spends a significant amount of time instructing medical students.

Dr. Parsons is an associate professor of medicine and public health sciences at the University of Virginia where he practices as an internal medicine hospitalist. As Director of Clinical Competency for UVA School of Medicine, he currently oversees the teaching, assessment, and remediation of clinical skills across the four-year medical student curriculum. He also serves as Associate Director of COACH, a GME-wide remediation program where he provides faculty development to residency and fellowship programs on the remediation of learners struggling with clinical reasoning. His research interests center on the teaching and remediation of clinical reasoning, specifically management reasoning, and he is pursuing his PhD in health professions education at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Dr. Parsons is active in the national ACP, serving on the Council of Early Career Physicians, and Virginia Chapter of the ACP, serving on the Governor’s Council.
