Dr. Uppal

Meet Dushant Uppal, MD, MSc, Assistant Professor of Medicine at UVA School of Medicine.

This post is part of a series of interviews with new and junior faculty. Stay tuned for more interviews with your colleagues!

Q: How long have you been at UVA and where were you before you came to UVA?

I have been at UVA for the past 7 years. I completed my fellowship in Gastroenterology at UVA and stayed on as faculty. We moved from Nashville, where I completed my internal medicine residency.

Q: Is there something that you’ve worked on or accomplished in your career that you’re particularly proud of or glad you were able to experience?

During fellowship, I completed a master’s in clinical science which helped me to gain a better understanding of clinical research and health administration. I hope to continue to utilize this knowledge to advance my own practice as an interventional gastroenterologist.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Like a lot of children, I hoped to be a professional athlete! Of course, life takes you in new directions, and I wouldn’t change my career choice or the journey I took to arrive here in anyway.

Q: A favorite spot to grab lunch during the day?

Time permitting, I like to go to the Corner to get lunch. Otherwise, it’s usually crackers from our GI lunch room!

Q: Do you have any children or fur babies at home?

We have 2 children, ages 6 and 8, and a soon to arrive puppy!

Q: Do you have a favorite local restaurant or hangout spot?

My wife and I love the restaurants in the Belmont area, including Tavola, The Local, and Mas and several of the Main Street restaurants, including Tavern and Grocery, Public Fish and Oyster, and Oakhart Social. For a quick, great tasting takeout meal, we can’t resist La Michoacana.

Q: Anything else you’d like to add?

I couldn’t be prouder to have the opportunity to live in Charlottesville and work at UVA! I’m hoping to develop a thriving career here!
