Description/Learning objectives: Effective de-escalation skills are critical for providers to learn. These skills can help to ensure safety of both the patient and staff, help patients manage their emotions, and help to avoid interventions that may escalate a patient’s agitation. Providers will learn how to use effective de-escalation skills in this workshop. Learning outcomes: identify basic principles of behavior (the ABCs of behavior, antecedents, behavior, consequences); describe principles of behavior management (reinforcement and punishment); and learn evidence-based skills for de-escalation of patients.
