Dear School of Medicine Community,
Welcome to the 2024-25 academic year at the UVA School of Medicine! As your dean, it gives me great pleasure to see our new and returning students, faculty, staff, and trainees after what I hope was a rejuvenating summer.
I am pleased to share that we have 156 medical students, 73 biomedical sciences doctoral students, 61 public health sciences master’s students, and 286 residents and fellows joining the School of Medicine and UVA Health this year.
It is exciting to already see our students and trainees embrace the learning and training opportunities and self-discovery that will mark their transformational journey in the medical profession. Whether they are honing a new skill in clinic rotations, immersing themselves in groundbreaking research, or analyzing methods to improve population health, they are poised to become the next generation of excellent physicians and scientists who will make a difference in our patients’ lives.
We are also thrilled to welcome 78 new faculty who joined the SOM over the past two months, with more talented faculty anticipated to arrive in the coming months. These new faculty bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that, alongside our existing faculty, will further enhance all of our missions. The upcoming School of Medicine New Faculty Retreat on September 11 will be a wonderful time to connect and celebrate all the new additions to our UVA Health family.
The beginning of each academic year is truly an exciting time, filled with new ideas and energy to further our mission to transform health and inspire hope for all Virginians and beyond. Thank you for being an integral part of our School and for your passion and dedication to advancing the noble profession of medicine. It is inspiring to see the enthusiasm and collaborative spirit among our team members who eagerly invest in our community from day one.
I wish everyone an amazing experience this academic year as we work together to shape a brighter and healthier future for all. I look forward to seeing the great things we will achieve together in support of our education, research, clinical, and community pillars — the possibilities are limitless!
