For the 160 medical and students entering the UVA School of Medicine, receiving their white coats at a ceremony on August 11 signified entry into their chosen profession. During the afternoon event in Old Cabell Hall with family and friends in attendance, the new MD students received white coats embroidered with their names and recited a covenant with the faculty. The UVA School of Medicine Class of 1965 generously endows this ceremony each year.
These 160 students were selected from a pool of 5,679 applicants. Their mean GPA is 3.86, and mean MCAT score 517.75 (95%ile). They represent 29 states and the District of Columbia, coming from 68 undergraduate institutions. 46 students (29%) are from groups underrepresented in medicine including rural and disadvantaged Virginians.
The students received words of advice from Barry Collins, executive director of the UVA Medical Alumni Association, Nora Kern, MD, ’08, president of the UVA Medical Alumni Association, Melina Kibbe, MD, dean of UVA School of Medicine, Misky Shariff, SMD’24, president of the student-led Mulholland Society, and Meg Keeley, MD ’92, senior associate dean for education.
Reaching out for help is a strength not a weakness. While medicine is an incredibly fulfilling and impactful career, it is also a weight that cannot be carried alone.”
— Misky Shariff, SMD’24, president of the student-led Mulholland Society
