Mullholland Society Hosts Holiday Events Benefiting Our Community and Showcasing Incredible Artistic Talents

January 4, 2024 by jta6n@virginia.edu

The UVA School of Medicine’s Mullholland Society had a busy and exciting December hosting fun events benefiting our community and showcasing the incredible talents of our medical students. The Mullholland Society is an organization for our medical students to promote student voice and interests at the SOM, UVA Health, and the Charlottesville community. Read below a few of the inspiring ways our medical students celebrated the holidays.

Blizzard Bash — Winter Celebration for Local Elementary Students

In early December, Mulholland Community Service Class Representatives Megan Harris and Saqib Rizvi worked together with the Boys & Girls Club of Central Virginia to host Blizzard Bash, a fun, interactive afternoon of games and activities for local K-5 students to celebrate the end of the fall semester and the beginning of winter.
Over 30 medical student volunteers from across all four medical school classes helped to put together and lead stations including an obstacle course relay, tower building contest, hungry hippos, crocheting, finger knitting, painting, freeze dance, and more. We’re not sure who had more fun —our medical students, or the K-5 students they served — but we know it was a fantastic time for everyone involved!

Bedpan Bowl Flag Football Raises Money for Camp Holiday Trails

The Mulholland Society hosted the 17th Annual Bedpan Bowl on Saturday, December 9. The annual friendly flag football game between the first-year class of medical students and the second-year class brought together students while raising money for a worthy cause. This year, all the money raised from the raffle (nearly $1000!) was donated to Camp Holiday Trails, a local charity founded by UVA pediatricians that provides summer camp experiences for children with special medical needs. The Mulholland Society extends a special thank you to Joey Chavez and Nina Jannatifar, the class president and vice president of the Class of 2027, for organizing the event, to all the students that volunteered to participate in the game and to everyone who participated in the raffle in support of a great cause.

School of Medicine Talent Show Highlights Medical Student Artistic Gifts

The Mulholland Society hosted the annual UVA School of Medicine Talent Show on Thursday, November 30. The event was an inspiring and entertaining evening that brought together the School of Medicine community to witness the incredible talents of our medical students. The 2023 show featured performances from Ted Llinas, Bess Renjilian, Natasha Gleichmann, Riley Calicchia, Katheryne Chun, Zuhayr Shaikh, Sophia Dort, Ruja Parikh, Jack Ham, the Serenata Quartet (a MS1 chamber music group), No Scrubs (a MS1 band), and the Arrhythmics (our School of Medicine a capella group). The showcase included vocal, comedic, artistic, and dance presentations as well as light-hearted commentary and engaging introductions by our awesome emcees Bobby Pazhwak, Stephanie Malta, and Natasha Gleichmann. The Mulholland Society is immensely grateful for all the performers who graciously donated their time for this event, making it a highlight of the semester, and to everyone who filled the McLeod Hall Auditorium to capacity in support of their classmates, friends, and students. We also wish to extend a special thank you to Ishaan Rischie, the vice president of the Class of 2026, for his incredible work organizing and advertising the special night!
