On June 21-22, 2023, the School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Medical Education welcomed a new group of residents and fellows to UVA Health. In addition to the practical aspects of onboarding like picking up ID badges and ordering long white coats, the interns participated in presentations on patient safety, interactions with law enforcement, and Safe Space training for our LGBTQ+ patients. This year, for the first time, our interns toured Grounds and learned the history of medicine at UVA. They also visited the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers and discussed other topics like potential health disparities among our patients, which will undoubtedly provide the new doctors enhanced empathy when treating vulnerable populations.
We are incredibly proud to have this talented group of interns joining all of our School of Medicine clinical departments, including Dentistry, and UVA Health Pharmacy. The 152 individuals come from 28 contiguous states and Puerto Rico, while eight international medical graduates are arriving from Australia, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Egypt, Grenada, Poland, and Ukraine.
