The School of Medicine welcomed the Class of 2027 first-year medical students on August 2, 2023. The students were greeted by Dean Melina Kibbe, Senior Associate Dean for Education Meg Keeley, and Director of Matriculating Class Orientation Mary Kate Worden. With their College Deans, they learned about resources available in Student Affairs, Student Health and Wellness, the Financial Aid Office, and the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library.
During orientation, students learned about the educational principles of the Cells to Society Curriculum and attended the Brodie Gateway Dinner, meeting their Foundations of Clinical Medicine coaches who will follow them throughout medical school.
The new students enjoyed getting to know each other better at Field Day on August 5, with Pinn College winning for the first time in the history of the event! They also participated in a Day of Service on August 8, where students gathered with their Colleges and participated in activities at 19 different community service sites. This event is a highlight of orientation week because the students have the opportunity to bond with their peers while serving their new community.
The Class of 2027 will receive their white coats at the White Coat Ceremony, endowed by the School of Medicine Class of 1965, on August 11, 4:00 – 5:30 pm. For this ticketed event, register here. The University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association is also offering a live stream option.
