BME graduate student Zehra Demir is one of three honorees selected for UVA’s John T. Casteen III Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award. Demir is a first-generation college student who has “a keen desire to ‘pay it forward.'” She is the outreach chair of UVA’s First-Generation Student Coalition and also established a Grad-to-Undergrad Mentorship Program. Other 2023 recipients include Barbara Brown Wilson, and associate professor in the School of Architecture and Melody Bianchetto, former vice-president and chief financial office of UVA Finance.
