The UVA BIMS Student Interview and Recruitment Committee
For this year’s student recruiting season, the Biomedical Sciences graduate program (BIMS) has created a new committee composed of student appointees from each of their PhD programs. The goal of this committee is to bring student voices into the spotlight of program recruitment efforts and to build skills in leadership and cooperation that students will benefit from throughout their graduate and postgraduate careers.
The UVA BIMS Student Interview and Recruitment Committee (SIRC) is a group of second, third, and fourth-year students selected from each BIMS degree program to aid in developing the social and student affairs elements of the BIMS recruitment process. Members of the SIRC have already begun working with the BIMS admin team on the virtual interview process and strategize methods for increasing candidate interest in the University and Charlottesville as a whole. This group of motivated students was recommended by the directors of graduate studies for each program in recognition of their drive and dedication to their programs and education.
The SIRC is developing plans for conducting virtual lab tours and creating new social media engagement strategies to better connect with applicants and their interests. The SIRC has served a vital role in the planning and implementation of the virtual applicant interviews in January and February. As interview decisions and offers of admission are being made, the committee will shift gears to planning for in-person candidate visits and gathering student volunteers to aid in the efforts.
The BIMS leadership and admins are excited to work with the SIRC this year and hope this new tradition of student leadership and engagement in recruiting will benefit both the students’ skill development as well as the program’s recruiting initiative. BIMS is very thankful to these students, and wishes to recognize this year’s founding class of committee members:
