UVA’s chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society had a busy year in 2022-23. AOA students volunteered this spring and summer for a new partnership with Camp Holiday Trails. Some students volunteered for their summer camp for children with disabilities, while others volunteered for Camp Holiday Trail’s annual charity event “Hope Grows.” This past year, UVA’s chapter of AOA became a sponsor for the “Hope Grows” event to support the camp.
In addition, several AOA students helped host a field trip for third and fourth graders from the International School of Charlottesville, a language immersion school in town. The elementary school kids learned about the skeletal system and made finger casts, learned about the urinary tract and looked at the teacher’s kidneys with ultrasound, and learned how to image the body using stuffed animals as examples under the x-ray machine.
In the spring, AOA hosted visiting professor Anthony Fleg, MD, from the University of New Mexico who gave a lecture on “Healing the Beloved Community.”
And finally, the society congratulates Mohamad El Moheb, MD, and sponsor Allan Tsung, MD, for receiving of the 2023 AOA Postgraduate Fellowship Award from the national AOA office that is providing funding for his research on “Nationwide Analysis of Sociodemographic Disparities in Health-Related Quality of Life of Cancer Survivors.”
Nora Kern, MD, the AOA Faculty Councilor of UVA’s chapter, wishes to express her gratitude to the students and faculty sponsors who helped make this past year so successful.
