The AAMC Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) Awards for Excellence awarded the UVA Medical Alumni Association an Honorable Mention Award for Excellence in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives category. The Honorable Mention Award was granted in recognition of the inaugural Black Medical Alumni Weekend program hosted by the UVA Medical Alumni Association in April 2022.
Judges comments included: “I admire the bold efforts of the whole UVA team to put together an event to celebrate a previously marginalized and still underrepresented population. The team recognizes they can not rewrite history and created an event full of thoughtful programming to build a foundation for re-engagement. Kudos.”
The event, designed by the UVA Medical Alumni Association in collaboration with alumni volunteers, welcomed back 85 alumni, students and guests to Grounds for a weekend of celebration, reconnection and recognition.
