In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the UVA Health Office of Diversity and Community Engagement and Claude Moore Health Sciences Library will host a DEI Book of the Month Club Nov. 18, 12-1 p.m. in Pinn Hall, Room 1005, to discuss the book The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines Western Medicine and Traditional Healing.

Written by Dr. Lori Alvord and Elizabeth Cohen Van Pelt, the novel is described as “A spellbinding journey between two worlds, this remarkable book describes surgeon Lori Arviso Alvord’s struggles to bring modern medicine to the Navajo reservation in Gallup, New Mexico — and to bring the values of her people to a medical care system in danger of losing its heart.”

The book discussion will be facilitated by Brianna Baldwin, a fourth-year medical student at the UVA School of Medicine and member of the Dine Navajo Nation.

Register to attend in-person (lunch available) or to receive the Zoom link.
